WHY ARE BELT PROMOTION TESTS IMPORTANT?

Share with us the value you see in coming together on a quarterly basis for promotion celebrations. At CHOSUN you are not invited to test unless the instructors feel you are prepared. So, essentially it is a clebration and demonstration before your peers of your aquired skills. Let us know your views.

  1. "PROGRESS IS THE KEY TO MOTIVATION"

Belt tests are extremely important to help keep the martial artist on track. Allowing the martial artist to test and acquire a new belt gives them a sense of progress, which will ALWAYS motivate. I know I love taekwondo, and would train regardless, but the feeling of tying that new belt on, a higher ranking belt pumps me up, and gives me a sense of renewal. When the belts start getting darker, you know you are almost at that coveted black belt, which indecently is where the REAL training begins.
Also, belt tests or promotions help the student show off their newly acquired skills! All in all in my opinion, belt tests are important in keeping the martial artist motivated..

  2. Testing should be considered an honor not a burden or a reason to get nervous. Students are chosen to test when their instructors consider them ready. The different colored belts were not always used, however. This is a fairly recent addition to martial arts training. Many years ago, motivation had to come from within; either from a sense of pride or self preservation. After all martial arts were intended for self defense or as a means to wage more effective warfare.
Measuring one's progress and being motivated by obtaining a different color belt works for most of us in today's world very well. It is easier to set your goals and achieve them when you get some sort of tangible "reward".
