Yoga at CHOSUN "Dynamics and Dimension"

"Dynamics and Dimension"

One of the gifts that yoga brings us is learning how to work with our bodies in a dynamic way. But what does that mean? The other word most closely associated with dynamic is energetic. But that word alone does not tell the story. It is the quality of the energy and how it is used that offers us a path toward positive change. By learning how to access our core, grounding, and then distributing the energy in a deliberate and direct way, we become conscious of our body's dimensions. In our standing class this week, we will test this vital principle in the posture, Utkatasana or chair pose.

Yoga at CHOSUN "Beginner's Mind"

"Beginner's Mind"

It's a New Year and time for New Year's resolutions...but did you know that only 10% are actually kept? What if instead of attempting to make major changes on the outside, we just made a shift in our thinking? Buddhist teachings emphasize living with a "beginner's mind." In other words, having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and freedom from preconceptions when approaching anything in life. Sometimes, the smallest change in our outlook will have the most powerful outcome and possibilities for personal growth abound... small shifts equal big changes!

Join us for a fresh start...

The Chosun e-newsletter Archive Volume 7 #1 January, 2016

Dear Martial Arts Enthusiast,

Welcome to the January edition of the Chosun Taekwondo Academy e-newsletter! The month of January takes its name from the Roman god, Janus who is depicted as having two faces on one head; one looking ahead toward the unfolding future and one to the past. The many successes we have shared as a school body over the years have laid a strong foundation as we take this very important step into the future. We count our blessings and proceed with confidence and resolve.
Please take note of 2016 Test dates listed below...

Yoga at CHOSUN "Grounded"

December 3, 2015

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"Grounded"

The idea and practice of grounding is one of the first techniques you will work with in a typical yoga class. Whether seated or standing, particular attention is paid to your foundation from which centering, alignment and breath will flow. When any human activity, whether it be physical, mental or spiritual, emanates from a strong and stable core, the resulting mobility is enhanced by the relevance to it's source.  In our seated class this week, we will experience the grounding process as a way to reconnect to our inner strength.

Yoga at CHOSUN " Once a day"

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"Once a day"
If you are a regular yoga practitioner, it is almost certain that there will be something in class that you will find difficult to do. Who doesn't run into limitations when it comes to flexibility, strength, balance and endurance? Even the most proficient among us are not exempt! What do you do when you hit these barriers? One solution is so simple, most people don't even think of it! Why not commit to doing whatever posture that is offering you a challenge once a day? Even if you can't do the position at all, there are always modifications and then you can move on from there.  You might be surprised at the change!

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"I Surrender"

Everyone is familiar with the expression, "put your hands up."  This universal cultural gesture of the hands up with palms open means one thing...
I Surrender! What a coincidence that in yogic thought, the very same gesture is the mudra for giving and receiving; or taking in what you need and letting go of what you no longer need.  Many of us have at one time in our lives developed defense systems that have served us only to realize that the very habits that protected us now imprison us. In our yoga class this week, we will practice surrender by going deep into our own center with the support of our breath and the community of fellow practitioners.

Join us and release your burdens...

Yoga at CHOSUN "Isometrics"

October 28, 2015

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"Isometrics"

Wikipedia states that  isometric exercise involves the static contraction of a muscle without any visible movement in the angle of the joint; meaning that the length of the muscle and the angle of the joint do not change, though contraction strength may be varied. Think of a holding a plank pose and you get the picture! The practice of yoga uses these strengthening exercises to put "good" stress on the bones and joints. On a deeper level, these movements "fine tune" our instrument by teaching the mind how to effectively communicate with specific areas of the body. This week in our standing class, we will further explore the exacting use of isometrics to enhance our practice.

Yoga at CHOSUN "The Little Things"

       October 21, 2015
Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"The Little Things"

One of the great gifts that yoga gives us is the time and space to notice things about ourselves that might otherwise be overlooked. In our busy and often hectic lives, these small moments of self-awareness can have far reaching benefits for our lives. In your practice, you may have done the same pose dozens of times but this time something is different...it may be a weight shift or a different use of a muscle but the effect is that your experience has evolved and your practice has been transformed. Respect these moments because they are the "little things" that lead to big changes!

Join us and tune in to yourself...

Have you let your yoga practice slide? Now with summer behind us, Fall is a great time to re-new your practice. If you purchased a class card, no worries,  there is no expiration date. So don't waste time...

Yoga at CHOSUN "Anatomy of a Breath"

September 30, 2015
Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"Anatomy of a Breath"

We can live a fairly long time without food or water but without breath, life will end in a matter of seconds. Breathing is something we naturally take for granted and really don't think about too much... and that is a good thing! If we had to "think" about how to breathe, we wouldn't. On the other hand, this fundamental life force deserves some attention because if used to the fullest, it can increase our vitality and even serve as a vehicle to direct energy in our bodies. This week, in our seated class, we will explore just how the breath works and look at the ways it enhances our experience.

Yoga at CHOSUN "Hold that Pose"

September 16, 2015
Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY   www.chosuntkd.com
"Hold That Pose"

I like to tell my yoga students about one of my first yoga classes and the pose that did it for me! Seated on the floor, the instructor asked us to bring our legs together and extend  them forward making a right angle with the torso using our arms for support at our sides.  This common yoga posture is Dandasana or staff pose. At first I thought, "This is easy... after all I have been dancing and exercising all my life..." Well, after a few moments, my ego balloon burst and all I could think of was "when is she going to tell us to stop!" Holding any yoga pose is not easy but a valuable experience. It is here that you confront yourself, train your body and mind to stay present and cultivate compassion and mindfulness. These are the intangibles that with consistent practice we carry forward in our everyday lives.

Yoga at CHOSUN "Your Body, Your Teacher"

September 9, 2015
Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY   www.chosuntkd.com
"Your Body, Your Teacher"

In the practice of yoga, we are really our best teachers. Even though we might participate in a formal class with an instructor in front of us, through diligent practice and attention, we become more and more self-aware. This, in essence is the yoga journey. On the outside, a typical yoga class might consist of executing various poses but if the practitioner pays attention to breath, energy and observes what is happening on the inside, valuable lessons are learned.

Join us and engage in self-discovery...

Yoga at CHOSUN "Effort and Ease"

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY   www.chosuntkd.com
"Effort and Ease"
Sthira sukam asanam is a fundamental principle that runs through the yogic discipline and refers to a balance created between stability and strength on one hand and ease and comfort on the other. Although this might sound simple, it can be a difficult concept to grasp and even harder to achieve.  Embracing two opposite ideas at the same time can be a foreign concept in our often dualistic culture. This week, in our seated yoga class, we will explore ways to embody ease and effort to balance our lives on and off the mat.

"The Power of One More Breath"

It is a given that life holds many challenges and from time to time, our courage and resolve is tested. In truth, we have the strength to surmount the obstacles that present themselves. But how often have you heard that voice in your head that says "NO... you just don't have what it takes"? The whole of our yoga practice is an opportunity to face this phenomenon. When we are holding a difficult pose and want to "give up," take one more breath or maybe two and when you complete the posture, come back to your center of power. Instead of throwing it away, affirm your inner resolve and return with renewed vigor!

Yoga at Chosun "Patience and Practice

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY   www.chosuntkd.com
"Patience and Practice"

As the saying goes..."Anything worth doing is worth doing well." But doing something well and achieving perfection are two different things and sometimes we can get caught up in striving for the end result and miss the process. Even a conscientious and mindful yoga practitioner can veer in the direction of viewing the product of their practice as the goal. Sometimes, it helps to remind ourselves that the journey is the valuable experience for us and if we can employ patience, focus, and good intentions... the rest will follow.

YOGA at CHOSUN "Know and Go"

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"Know and Go"

The practice of yoga as with many other physical disciplines, involves training the body. In most yoga classes, particular attention is paid to alignment of the body, details of technique and intense focus on the execution of the poses. But just like a trained musician, at some point, the yoga practitioner must trust her knowledge and "let the movement flow." After all, we are not robots and it is through movement that we engage the world around us. Join us this week for a version of Ardha Chandrasana  (Half-moon pose) that goes with the flow!

YOGA at CHOSUN "The Third Dimension"

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"The Third Dimension"

One of the most popular poses in a yoga practice is Adho Mukha Svanasana or downward-facing dog and it gets its name from the position of a dog's back when it is stretching. It is an elongation of the spine by stretching in two directions. This technique, used in many yoga postures, is accomplished by moving the torso only in a linear plane.  On the other hand, the cat back or curved spine moves us into the third dimension as the spine makes an enclosure.  By rounding the spine and drawing up the strong abdominal muscles, we envelope ourselves and tap into the depth of our physical power.

YOGA at CHOSUN "Bending Backwards"

Chosun Taekwondo Academy & Hatha Yoga Center 62 Main St. Warwick NY www.chosuntkd.com
"Bending Backwards"

For many yoga practitioners, the back-bending poses can be intimidating because they take the body into the unseen space behind us. Quite often this can bring up emotions of fear and vulnerability but at the same time, cultivate inner strength and courage. On a physical level, they are the counterpart to the forward bending poses and help to stretch and elongate the muscles in the front of the body. In our seated class this week, we will explore several back-bending postures and experience their many benefits, both seen and unseen!

Nobody's perfect...and in reality it is our imperfections and particular traits that make us unique. "Weaving the Stories of Women's Lives" National Women's History Project 2015

by Kate Pernice, Chosun Taekwondo Academy 3rd Dan Black Belt
The following is her "story"

I grew up in Orange County and somehow my travels always brought me back to this area.  My dad farmed, had several businesses and then went into construction.  His entrepreneurial spirit influenced me in many ways, both in the work that he chose and in his belief that you can do anything you put your mind

to.  My mom is a wonderful story-teller.  I grew up hearing about her adventures of travel and work.  She was an independent woman, she sailed, she was a pilot-- her favorite story was when she worked for the military in Minnesota during WWII and she would pack her own parachute and go up to test the airplanes to do “spins and stalls” after they were repaired.  I learned from both of them a free-spirit determination, creative thinking and the importance of love.

Surrounded by nature in my childhood, I learned about the relationships between plants and animals and humans.  I became a vegetarian at the age of 16 along with my brother (with the concern of my parents).  I became interested in spacial design, studied architecture and did construction renderings for my dad’s business.  After traveling and the birth of my first son, I went on to study childbirth education, herbal medicine, homeopathy, yoga and eventually I entered nursing school and then a graduate program to become a nurse practitioner.  I remember in those first few months of practicing in a busy clinic, often coming home, discouraged and crying.  I felt that people deserved more than 10 or 15 minutes of my time, that their stories were important and that the act of listening has a healing effect especially when someone is struggling with life issues.  After 14 years of practicing in inner-city clinic settings I opened my own practice in order to offer the kind of care that I believed in.  Throughout those previous years I had 2 beautiful boys, (now grown) and my musician husband and I became interested in education, a direction that he pursued.  We renovated houses, camped, gardened, sailed, traveled and grew a family together.  At one of those disillusioned moments of my life I decided to attend a 4-year training in psychology and energy healing, brought this work into my practice, and went on to teach at that school for the past 15 years.  This is why you sometimes don’t see me in the Dojang.  The school is based in Miami and I travel there 5 times a year.  A few years ago I was simultaneously teaching in the Miami school and our sister school in Japan.  So I was traveling every month and although it was a wonderful experience I very much missed my time in the Dojang.  I feel so grateful to be part of these two wonderful communities of colleagues, friends and students.  Community has become very important to me; it is where we share our stories, our differences can be heard and our common ground found.  For the past three years a colleague and I have developed retreat-based work, The Sacred Living Project, examining the Sacred in ordinary life through music, poetry, movement, stories, group work and native traditions.  Each August for the past 11 years I trek to the wilderness-mountains of West Virginia as a facilitator for The Women’s Hero’s Journey.  It is my favorite way of doing the work that I do—bringing personal and group work and the complexity of our psyche into the raw simplicity of nature.  Courageous women from all over the world come to journey together with other women in the largest expanse of mountainous dark sky on the east coast.  The work is based on Joseph Campbell’s call to the mythic life, The Hero’s Journey.  We engage with the elements of air, water, fire, earth, we work with trust, grief, fierceness, vulnerability, we climb mountains, we descend into the earth, we walk on fire, take leaps of faith, we wander on the land, we face our aloneness, but mostly we come together in a loving community to discover more about ourselves.  And our program has now expanded to include a young women’s journey so that our circles span over a woman’s life-time.

So many times I have drawn upon my Taekwondo practice for strength, insight and perseverance and especially during the times that I have struggled in my life.  When I was a red belt I became very ill with Lyme disease and couldn’t practice for several months.  I remember reflecting again and again on the five tenets and the one that spoke loudest to me (as often one or two will come to the foreground when I need them) was “Indomitable Spirit”.   I found a connection to my larger self and could find comfort in the strength of my spirit while I simultaneously was quite disturbed by the strange and new experience of not having a strong and healthy body available to me.  I consider my Taekwondo practice a constant opportunity to find focus, inner balance and self-acceptance.  I love the rigor and the internal quiet, the yin and the yang of Taekwondo and the sense of belonging, not only to our Dojang but also amongst the tradition of our ancestor practitioners that have passed on the teachings.  I can’t imagine my life without Taekwondo.  As I enter my 10th year of practice and take stock of the things I feel immeasurably grateful for, and that are at the heart of my life as daughter, sister, mother, wife, friend, teacher, healer, gardener, wild woman, seeker, martial artist…  Taekwondo came into my life at just the right time and has continued to be a guiding post for me physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  I have surpassed my ideas and limiting beliefs about myself countless times and my inner indomitable spirit more times than not takes on the attitude of, “Why not?” when I am faced with a challenge.  I am so grateful to Patty and Master Doug Cook for their perseverance and dedication in bringing our wonderful community together.  That is no small feat in these busy times.
